Italian Demonstrative Adjectives

– Questo libro è sul tavolo (this book is on the table)

– Questo pomeriggio vado al cinema (I’m going to the cinema this afternoon)

 

Italian demonstrative adjectives are:

QUEGLI / QUEI

QUELLE

 

 

Please note that QUEGLI is used before nouns beginning with a vowel or s+consonant / z / x / y, wherease QUEI is used in all other cases.

Questo / questa / questi / queste” are used to indicate someone or something that is close to the speaker.

On the contrary, “quello / quella / quegli / quelle” are to be used to indicate something or someone that is far from the speaker.

 

Italian demonstrative adjectives must agree in gender and number with the noun they refer to.

 

Examples:

Questo scaffale è rotto (this shelf is broken)

 

Questa matita è nuova(this penci is new)

 

Questi amici sono simpatici(these male friends are likeable)

 

Queste torte sono buone (these cakes are good)

 

Quello scorcio è romantico (that glimpse is romantic)

 

Quella settimana è stata stressante (that week has been stressful)

 

Quegli anni sono stati stupefacenti (those years have been amazing)

 

Quelle persone sono affidabili (those people are reliable)
