What is the best way to learn Italian?

We at Italianencounter.com have helped hundreds of students since the blog went live back in 2012.  And one question that was always asked is “What is the best way to learn Italian?“.

Well we are sorry to let you down by saying there isn’t a magic formula to help you figure out the best way to learn Italian.

The answer depends on the following 5 aspects.

what_is_the_best_way_to_learn_Italian?

1. HOW MUCH TIME CAN I INVEST?

Ask yourself a simple question: how much time can you devote to learning Italian? If you have limited time, you need to focus on time-effective solutions like hiring a Skype tutor or booking a crash course, either online or in-person.

If, instead, you can afford to invest more time, you can adopt more of a self-learning approach, which involves for instance downloading language apps, finding a language exchange partner, and so on.

2. WHAT ARE MY GOALS?

We all do something for a reason. Ask yourself: why do I want to learn Italian? What are my short-term and long-term goals?  Even if you decide to learn Italian for personal interest, you can take this as your goal, and tailor your learning adventure accordingly.

3. DO I WANT TO LEARN ALONE OR TOGETHER?

If you feel like you learn better when you are surrounded by other people, and are therefore able to incorporate new vocabulary and structures just by interacting with your study companions, then a traditional classroom-based course could be a good fit for you. If you enjoy working on your own, then a one-on-one course with a language coach is ideal.

4. WHAT IS MY LEARNING STYLE?

Do you learn better by watching videos on YouTube or by reading short stories? Are you obsessed with grammar rules or do you have trouble memorizing them? In short, what is your learning style? This answer will play an important role in defining your study plan and in deciding the right mix of tools to use to help you reach your goals.

5. WHAT TOPICS DO I LIKE BEST?

Whether it’s Italian art or food, there must be a list of topics you enjoy talking about or, rather, learning about more than others. So, ask yourself: what are my favourite topics related to Italy? Let your interests guide you through your learning: pick language materials related to your favourite topics and engage in meaningful conversations with your teacher. This will make your learning easier and more enjoyable.
